RGM,

I can't help but think this is saying something to you -- something about your interviewing skills, and something that you can take away as a lesson. RGM, you came away sounding too academic, and that's a deal killer. It may not be that you have no industry experience, because with this job (Applications Scientist) they fill a zillion of them with academic scientists. You just didn't sound like you could "convert" easily to an industry person. You need to think about that conversation . . . What were the elements of your "he's an academic" sound? All you have on a phone interview is the sound of your voice and the way that you answer questions.

My guess is that there was some missing enthusiasm -- some missing statements like "I can't wait to start using some of this experience of mine in the real world, where it can be closer to applications of actually helping someone instead of simply answering basic questions." You've got to be really sincere about this. Hiring managers have terrific BS-detectors.
