I have a question for people with experience in industry. I was recently interviewed for a Field Application Scientist position. I have many of the core technical aspects of this oranization's core technologies on my CV. I don't completely have one of their more important ones. So I definitely am NOT their perfect candidate.
I made it to the 2nd round phone interview with the hiring manager.
In short, they never replied back if they wanted a face to face or not. I received info from the recruiter mentioning "yes, this person is very good technically, but the person's experience or lack of, in the industry is a concern"
OK..all you fortunate industry people. WHAT is this "experience" they are speaking of?
Do I need to take a courses in: Emailing 101, Answering Vmail 101, Tracking a package 201????
This is an entry level position, WHAT, could possibly be SOOOOOOOO esoteric about this position, which would make a person say "yeah not enough industry experience" ??
I don't think having a Ph.D. should guarantee a person a job, BUT you would think if a person has the required skill sets, and has a Ph.D. a light bulb would go off in the manager's head and say "hmm they have a PhD, I'd like to think they can do the other non-technical aspects of this position"
Just a bit venting, I'm tired of learning/hearing, "oh great technically, great socially, lack of significant industry experience"
If graduate schools operated like hiring managers, almost NO ONE would be able to get a Ph.D.
